We're less than a week before the Big Day, and surely every pol in their right mind is madly scrambling to get the message out.
Except for David Price. While this long-time rep of the Western Triangle is in a strong position, Congressman Price took a moment from what has to be the busiest week of his year to come to Easley Elementary School in northern Durham this morning and congratulate in person the winners of an essay contest about "What The American Flag Means To Me."
There wasn't any press, no cameras (except for the proud parents, myself included). There wasn't any good electoral reason to do this, except that Price has always been involved in education, and he's just an all-around nice guy. I'm glad I voted for him. Again.
It was a full-on patriotic celebration, complete with the Northern High School Junior Air Force ROTC drill squad, the Easley Elementary School Chorus singing the national anthem, and full support from Sun Trust bank and the Exchange Club of Durham and the Exchange Club of Greater Durham, who sponsored the contest. A good time was had by all, and while there were plenty of Obama and McCain bumper stickers in the parking lot, partisan bickering was noticeably absent.
And if the 3rd Grader in the center bears a passing resemblence to me, well . . .
Winners:
3rd grade: Owen Mancour
